Ever wondered what those mysterious publication codes mean?
If you’ve explored a CGA publication, you’ve likely noticed each publication has a unique alphabetical and numerical identifier. These codes aren’t just random—they can help you quickly identify the content of the publication!
The identifiers consist of single-letter codes for standards and guidelines grouped into broad technical categories and double-letter codes for technical and educational resources such as alerts, bulletins, position statements, training materials, and reports.
Single-Letter Identifiers
C = Cylinders
Publications on steel, aluminum, and composite cylinders, including methods for pressure testing, requalification, inspection, marking, change of gas service, and internal corrosion.
E = Equipment
Resources related to equipment such as hoses, hose connections, regulators, flowmeters, and orifice flow selectors.
F = Food Gases
Publications addressing food gases, good manufacturing practices, hazard analysis and risk-based preventative controls, and supplier qualifications for food and beverage gas distributors.
G = Gases
Publications covering various gases like acetylene, ammonia, oxygen, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, helium, nitrogen, and more, along with related equipment and processes.
H = Hydrogen
Publications focused on hydrogen, including topics like cryogenic hydrogen storage, hydrogen fuel technologies, bulk hydrogen supply systems, and steam reformer operations.
M = Medical Gases
Resources on medical gases, including their use in different facilities, system designs, analytical method validation, and quality management systems.
P = Protection & Safe Handling
Publications covering the safe handling, use, storage, transfilling, and practices for compressed gases, including topics like oxygen-deficient atmospheres, hazard communication, and process safety management.
S = Safety Devices
Publications that provide guidance on safety devices, including Pressure Relief Devices (PRDs) and other related equipment.
V = Valves & Valve Connections
Resources on various types of valves, valve connections, transfer connections, leak detection, marking requirements, and torque guidelines.
Double-Letter Identifiers
PS = Position Statements
Documents outlining CGA’s official position on specific subjects, typically used to communicate with regulators, code developers, or other external organizations.
SA = Safety Alerts
Publications issued to quickly notify of imminent dangers resulting from incidents or hazardous situations. These alerts are posted to CGA’s website free of charge.
SB/TB = Safety Bulletins/Technical Bulletins
Publications that include enforceable language or guidance, usually 2 to 3 pages long. There is an ongoing effort to transition these bulletins into standards or guidelines.
TM = Training Materials
Resources aimed at teaching compliance with CGA standards or communicating guidance, generally for non-experts. Examples include safety posters, videos, and eLearning modules.
TR = Technical Reports
Reports documenting research or testing that verify or establish CGA’s positions on various technical matters.
